Working Memory Training: What It Can and Cannot Do
Working memory training can build task skill and may support closely related control demands. The open question is when that practice becomes reusable outside the original exercise.
What working memory training targets
Working memory is the active workspace used to hold and update information while solving a problem. Training tasks usually ask users to maintain items, resist distraction, update recent information or operate on relations under time pressure.
N-back is the best-known example, but it is only one family. IQ Mindware is more interested in relational working memory: holding variables, positions, transformations and rules in mind while the problem changes.
What it can and cannot do
Working memory training can improve performance on the trained format, and sometimes on closely related formats. That does not automatically mean broad intelligence gains. Stronger designs need comparison tasks, varied wrappers and delayed transfer checks.
For this reason, IQ Mindware describes Capacity Gym as capacity training and transfer-oriented practice, not as a guaranteed IQ-raising intervention.
